Every week I look forward to telling you about what’s happening in our home. About where we are up to and what new things have been built or installed. Every damn week I get so excited about our new life and what will happen once we’re living there.
I also know that every week I come on here and tell you all about how much each stage of the build means to me and about the special meaning I find in each new thing. I suppose I am quite sentimental in that way… something I didn’t think I did much, but yeah, yeah, turns out I am.
This week though is even more special, and not in some heart tugging, cue the violins kind of way. This week is pure goddamn excitement… like jump up and down in one spot, clapping and squealing excitement. Something some of you would remember me doing all too well on the days that I smashed budget at work (now that’s what I call a high!!). This time though it wasn’t over anything quite as exciting or relate-able.
Four words people. Four little words that would either induce similar excitement or eye rolls and groans from you.
I. HAVE. A. KITCHEN!
I honest to god have a kitchen installed (mostly) and it is one of the biggest things I’ve been looking forward to.
Yeah yeah, I can hear your eyes rolling from here, so stop it!
I love cooking, we know this already. I love baking, we also know this too. What you may not know is that I love browsing cook books and blogs and recipes I’ve cut from magazines. I love gazing into my fully stocked awesome pantry (yes I actually do this).
My husband and I catch up on our days when he gets home from work. I sit on the bench drinking wine while he cooks some nights (though he hasn’t cooked much recently, tut tut!) I read emails, check Facebook, schedule Instagram posts. And all of these fabulous things are done in my kitchen. Because I LOVE kitchens.
I know people say it all the time, but my kitchen really is the heart of my home. Perhaps it has something to do with our open plan lifestyles that our kitchens have become so integrated into every day activities like homework and catch ups. But I really believe that kitchens are the key to a quality home and that’s not just the wannabe chef in me talking.
Take a second now and think back… How many memories do you have involving a kitchen?
Maybe it left a lasting impression on you, good or bad, just like my Nanna’s typically 70’s kitchen with lime green counter tops. Maybe you coveted a friend’s recent renovation where you promptly jumped on Pinterest to pin several hundred similar styled kitchens so you could drool over them later.
More likely it’s the memories you made in those kitchens. I can honestly tell you it wasn’t my Nanna’s counter tops that come to mind first (though they certainly left a lasting impression!!). No, it was the memory of playing card games at the kitchen table with my Nan, Great Grandma, little Sister and Great Grandfather. It was eating fresh peaches with those same people over hot school holidays. It was sitting in the window of my parent’s old kitchen on the farm having Dad put band-aids on my scraped knees.
So many memories… and they’re not even the food related ones! (If you missed it I wrote about those when I shared my amazing gluten free sausage rolls.) Either way you look at it, I think most of us can firmly say they have some great memories involving kitchens…. or maybe, it honestly is, just me and I’m just weird like that. (pfffft because we haven’t established that fact already!)
My point, if you a, is that I am really freaking pumped to have my kitchen installed, even if it isn’t 100% exactly how I want it yet (read: can’t afford the beautiful stone bench tops I really really wanted needed). But that’s OK too, because now I have an excuse to renovate in a few years (sorry honey!) and build even more memories in that kitchen.
So without further ado here is this week’s build update…. and my kitchen… because you know!

The aforementioned kitchen. Woohoo! Now to have the back splash tiled and oven & range hood installed.

The en-suite. Yup only one basin… because why does my husband need one?!

The bathroom, including fabulously large tub that might actually fit said husband!
There you have it folks, a quick little update on our ‘little’ home in the making. So much is happening each week that I can barely keep up with it, so be sure to stay tuned!
Ciao for now xx
P>S. I honestly did jump up and down, clapping and squealing when I saw that our kitchen had gone in!! 😛
