Easter for me as a child always meant one thing. Camping.
Every year without fail the family and I would pack up our gear and head out to the bush for the long weekend. We’d roast marshmallows over the fire, build cubby’s in the trees and best of all, hunt for Easter eggs around our campsite.
Well no. The best bit, now that I know I’m gluten intolerant, would have to be eating toasted hot cross buns for breakfast…. and lunch and every snack. Preferably with a poor unsuspecting chocolate bunny chaser!
We may not go camping every Easter anymore but eating toasted hot cross buns in the lead up and over that glorious 4 day weekend is still what it’s all about. Well, that and hanging out with my family!
For years now I’ve made do with the (let’s admit it) horrible store bought hot cross buns. But this year, I say enough is enough! It’s time for all of us to reclaim that little piece of a holiday that we didn’t fully realize we were missing.
Now it’s time to try your hand at making Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Hot Cross Buns yourself!
Don’t run for the hills just yet either. It’s actually no where near as hard as it seems, well, not the way I’ve made them!
If you’re anything like me, then I bet you are seriously sick of trying to find specialty gluten free flours and blending them into the perfect mix, only to use them once. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes it has to be done. But I think it can mean an awful lot of hard work every single time you step foot into the kitchen.
Anything that makes life easier, faster and well, tastier is alright by me. So I’ve figured out a no-fail way to make not only your favourite Traditional Hot Cross Buns. But I’ve also nailed these delectable Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Hot Cross Buns too!
None of us are really adverse to a little cheating, right?
Now it’s a rare day for me to tell you to go out and buy one very specific product. I’m open to all gluten free brands and products and most are fairly interchangeable. However! On this occasion you really do need to use Orgran brand Gluten Free Alternative Grain Wholemeal Bread Mix. Not only is it delicious and easy to use, but it’s the only brand of store bought, pre-mixed gluten free bread flour that I’ve found that will work in hot cross buns!
Trust me. I’ve taken all the hard work out of this for you. So pop down to your local supermarket or health food store and buy up a few of these bad boys. You’ll definitely want to make up a few batches and freeze them too! I mean, who honestly only eats one pack of hot cross buns? Not me!!!!
There really is no reason you have to miss out on your favourite holiday baked goodies anymore!
